What are ‘Snare Tealers’ ?

One of the searches that often brings visitors to our site is the question ‘what are rabbit tealers?’   so we thought it deserved an explanatory post.

A tealer is a very important element of an effective snare set, whether that’s a snare for a rabbit, fox or any other legal quarry.   As a minimum it’s job is to do two things :

  • to hold the snare loop at the right height so that it catches the animals head correctly
  • to hold the snare loop correctly across the run so that it is square to the direction of travel.

Traditionally rabbit tealers were made from hazel twigs, sharpened at one end to be pushed into the ground and with a shallow split at the other end to hold the wire noose.  Sometimes used in pairs, one either side of the noose.   When the snare caught, the tealer would fall away  leaving the noose attached directly to the securing peg.

The hazel tealer has now been largely superseded by the introduction of the ‘large loop & wire tealer’ system of snaring, an approach championed by Glenn Waters and demonstrated in Woodga’s DVD.  In this method the a large loop is held much higher and placed on the run to catch the rabbit as it leaps forward.

These wire tealers have a number of advantages over their hazel preprocessors:

  • they are thinner so less visible even though they are longer.
  • they are stronger and more firmly fixed in the ground, keep the snare in position more consistently.
  • They form an integral part of the snare – being anchored to the peg at one end and the snare at the other.  The way in which the snare is attached to the tealer forms a natural swivel and reduces the chances of a rabbit becoming tangled.
  • They are available in two designs; the classic ‘figure 4′ and the ‘single’ which is easier to insert in hard ground.

Making a Netmaker’s Gauge

We’re not really net makers here at Fourteenacre, although we do recognise the skill and craftsmanship that goes into a hand made net.

We’ve had a few requests for net gauges, the spacers that are used when tying a net, so I thought I’d have a go at making one from a rectangular aluminium blank. It turned out to be a lot easier than I thought.

Here are the tools and equipment that you need:  A suitable blank of aluminium or other material, a flat file, a nail file or emery board,  a sponge kitchen scourer, an egg cup, a five pence piece and a pencil.

Step 1: Mark the lines for the curved corners of the gauge. Use a a five pence piece to as a template for the three small curves and the eggcup for the larger curve on the remaining corner.

Step 2: Using the flat file carefully file down the corners of the blank along the lines you've drawn. The aluminium is soft and works easily.

Step 3: Use the emery board to complete the filing and smoothing of the corners. Also work along all the edges to remove any sharp corners.

Rabbit Drop Box

The rabbit drop box is a large scale, permanent set, multi-catch trap.  It consists of a fairly deep pit with a pivoted trapdoor above it and a tunnel to channel the rabbits over the trapdoor. The trapdoor falls away under the weight of a passing rabbit, dropping it into the pit or ‘box’.

Placed across a fence line this trap creates an artificial route that rabbits will begin to use regularly—at which point the trap can be ’switched on’ and will take a large number of rabbits very quickly. It takes a bit of setting up but once in place will work reliably over a long period.

For best results the trap should be installed at the same time that rabbit proof fencing is erected. If added to an existing fence line, allow the trap to settle in and then slowly block off all the other gaps that the rabbits use.

I thought it worth including a few pictures of the project Steve in Yorkshire has been working on. He built several traps which are now catching well. It’s worth pointing out that Steve has sited these tunnels in a quite unusual way—normally the tunnel goes through the fence.
