Getting started

Getting started in trap making is much easier than you might think.  It doesn’t need specialist tools to begin with and you can choose to work with whatever material you’re most comfortable with ; wood, mesh or even plastic.

It’s also something that youngsters can get involved to learn some practical skills, the satisfaction that comes from making something that works and a greater understanding of and respect for their target quarry.  We’ve had lots of emails from youngsters who’ve used the plans in our books to make their first traps and then gone on to develop their own ideas.  In fact a couple of lads from Shetland even made it into our second book !

In this section we’ll discuss some of the things you might want to think about. There are tools you can buy which  be useful.  There are legal restrictions which you need to understand.

In terms of what you can build, also take a look at the Designs section.
