The Black Cat Rat trap uses an unusual trigger mechanism, different to almost all
other rat traps on the market. The trap is fired by the trigger being lifted up and not by
a downward pressure. This has some safety benefits because anything walking on the
trigger is unlikely to set it off – only a target lifting the bait (and trigger) will release the
killbar.
This has an important implication for the bait which must be used. Any bait must be solid
and fixed to the trigger – chunk of apple, thick slice of ‘marathon’ bar or even a
liquorice ‘allsort’. Soft bait like peanut butter will not work.
Where there is the risk of trapping non-target species an appropriate box or other
container must be used to enclose the trap. This should have entrances which are
restricted to an appropriate size to exclude anything larger than a rat.
